Last night’s sermon was about holiness, but something else also caught my mind. There was a quote from Scottish Bible expositor Alexander MacLaren: “We may have as much of God as we will. Christ puts the key of the treasure-chamber into our hand, and bids us take all that we want. If a man is admitted into the bullion vault of a bank and told to help himself, and comes out with one cent, whose fault is it that he is poor?” (Go look this up!)

Essentially you can have as much of God as you want. You will find that the infinite God never runs out of love, grace, mercy, glory, power, riches, or newness! God has made Himself very accessible, so why do we so often settle for so little of all that He has freely offered? When someone gives you a good gift, don’t you take it? Why settle for so little, especially when God wants you to have so much?

God has given us a lot. Look at Ephesians 1:18-20, and 3:16-21. This is only a small part of the things to which we have access! You can ask God for wisdom (James 1:5). You can ask God for and about a lot of things (Matthew 21:22; John 16:24). Jesus told us we can call God our Father (the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer in the Gospels). We are God’s children and can call Him Dad (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6). We can come boldly to God’s throne of grace (Hebrews 4:15-16). Like many prophets and psalmists, you can even talk to God about your feelings with all honesty.

God is infinite, and He eagerly invites us to explore as much of Him as we want! Why then are we so much less eager in our desire to explore? Why do we stroll into a vault full of freely given riches and only come out with a penny?
