Sometimes I look at people who are really good at something and I think, “Wow. I may never be that good.” Whether it’s playing an instrument, interacting with people, recalling Bible knowledge, explaining an opinion well, or any other thing, sometimes I forget that I can get good at those, too.

For example, I play the piano well and sometimes people tell me they could never be that good, but I’m sure they can. I wasn’t anywhere near this good when I started, I’ve worked regularly over the years for it. I’m only good at it because I do it all the time. So if I want to be as good at something as someone else, I just need to start doing it regularly. The people I admire didn’t get where they are without some regular effort, so I should expect to put some regular work in if I want to get there.

For another example, sometimes I’m daunted by how much work and time goes into getting better at something. Sometimes that deters me from even trying, but it shouldn’t. All of that work doesn’t get done at once. All of that work is spread out over time and done in smaller steps. Just because it might take years to be amazing at something doesn’t mean I won’t be good at it and see marked improvement on the way. Just because it takes work and time doesn’t mean it isn’t completely enjoyable.

You and I are not going to be good at everything right away, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get good at things. Just because you and I may not be as amazing as the person we admire doesn’t mean we can’t get there. As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
