I’m not trying to be political, just in case you were wondering. I’m just going to talk about the different times when boundaries are good and when they are not.

Many walls have been built historically. A few that come to mind are the Berlin Wall, the Great Wall of China, and the walls around Jerusalem that Nehemiah rebuilt in the Bible. Many walls have been built metaphysically. We build boundaries within and around ourselves to protect us morally or emotionally, to keep others away, or for many other reasons. Walls are made to keep some things out and to keep other things in. What you are trying to keep and why you are trying to keep it are the things that make the wall good or bad.

Building a wall between your home and a forest filled with rabid wolves is good. You effectively cut yourself and your family off from the danger and destruction. You are protected by the wall.

Building a wall between you and your allies in a war zone is bad. You effectively cut yourself and your comrades off from aid and reinforcements, and you cut your allies off from the same. You and your allies are restricted by the wall.

Building a wall between you and someone who loves you and cares for you is bad. You effectively cut yourself off from their help, no matter how much they want to give it to you. You are isolated by the wall.

Building a wall between yourself and bad influences is good. You effectively help yourself to stay away from that danger, and get into far less trouble. You are guarded by the wall.

Good walls are made to protect and guard the precious things on the safe side of them.
