I’ve heard it said and seen for myself that the Bible is written for us, not to us. Meaning while we should read it and get things out of it, we need to realize that it was written in a different culture and a different language, so that can sometimes affect how we need to read it.

As our new pastor at church puts it, it’s like reading someone else’s mail. You can make sense of it, but sometimes there are unspoken contextual parts that you might not be familiar with, if you know about them at all. Finding out the contextual details will let you know more than you would have found otherwise.

While you can certainly get what you need just by reading the Bible as it is, there is so much more to be gathered by studying it, talking to God about it, and looking at several sources for context details. All this makes everything really jump off the page in a new, more meaningful way.
