Feeling guilty or feeling remorse is not the same thing as repenting. Simply feeling bad about doing something or having regret over making the wrong choices does not mean that you’ve repented. Feeling bad or guilty about doing the wrong thing can certainly be a part of how you get to repentance, but we were not made to feel guilt long-term. Guilt is supposed to point you in the right direction, not keep you in misery or keep you from going in the right direction.

Repentance is changing your mind and direction about something. It’s realizing, recognizing, and acknowledging you are wrong, then changing your behavior to do the correct thing (What Repentance Really Is).
