In church yesterday morning, something in the sermon stuck out at me: When God’s justice surprises us or causes us to take pause, could it be because we’ve taken His mercy and grace for granted?

God is merciful and just at the same time, but sometimes we focus more on the mercy than the justice. The pastor pointed out that we often get upset at God for allowing or doing certain things, but then when He allows or does something that we approve of, suddenly that’s different. We sing “Amazing Grace”, and then walk around acting like, “Well why wouldn’t God give me grace?” when we should have been subject to God’s justice. We ask why God would let bad things happen, but when it comes to God saving a sinful human, we essentially say, “Why not?”

Do we truly realize just how correct God’s justice is? Do we deep down feel like we somehow deserve God’s mercy and grace? Do we have a correct view of both God’s justice and His mercy?
