Today was the first day of Vacation Bible School at my church. Our first lesson was on truth coming from God. We learned about Adam and Eve (Genesis 2-3), the truth God told them, and the lie Satan told them. At our last class gathering before the full assembly, we asked the children questions about the lesson we’d had earlier. One of the questions was: “What were the consequences of Adam’s and Eve’s choice to eat the fruit when God told them not to?”
We were expecting an answer about sin entering the world, or about Adam and Eve getting kicked out of the garden of Eden. One of the children near me muttered his answer, which is one of the most modern metaphors I’ve ever heard: “They got banned. From the Roblox server.”
For those who don’t know, Roblox is an online gaming platform where kids can play all sorts of games, and getting banned is when you get kicked off a game and can’t play anymore because you did something against the rules. So when Adam and Eve were kicked out of Eden and the relationship they had with God before, that was God banning them from the Roblox server.
The answer was hilarious at the time, but now that I’m thinking about it, it’s pretty serious. Adam and Eve (and by extension the rest of us) don’t get to play that game anymore. But God wants us to be able to, which is why He sent Jesus. Jesus can get us unbanned.
