God and country are both important, but you can’t have a country without God. God sets up and takes down whomever He chooses, both leaders and peoples (Psalm 75:6-7; Daniel 2:20-21, 4:17).
The Bible talks about Israel as a nation and how things went well for them when they followed God, and it talks about how badly it went when they stopped following God (various Old Testament books). The Bible talks about how nations were destroyed for their wickedness (Genesis 18:20-21, 19:13). It talks about how nations were preserved for repenting of sin (Jonah). It is apparently very important that God should be the God of a nation.
When God is the God of a nation, the nation becomes righteous because they are following God. It is good for a nation to do right by following God, and that is when God blesses a nation.
Proverbs 13:34 – “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
