I’ve been trying to move away from it, but some of my blog posts are not written the right way. Starting with an idea and then looking for supporting Bible verses is the wrong way to do it, and I’ve been guilty of that. The idea might be good and godly, and I might make sure not to take the verses out of context, but going to the Bible afterwards as a way to support an idea is wrong. You should start with the Bible and go out from there.
When writing your Biblical advice or lesson, take your Bible reference in context. You might have to read more than just a few verses or chapters around it to really get the proper sense of it, and in some cases you should know the context of the whole Bible to put your one reference into context, like when God told Hagar to go back to a less than ideal situation after she ran away from her mistress (Genesis 16). If I didn’t know what God’s ultimate plan was for this situation, I would think God was unreasonable and cruel.
In short, start with the Bible, know the context, and work from the inside out.
