In the Lord’s Prayer as He taught His disciples about praying, we see the words, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

In Heaven, God’s will is done without delay or second thought. There is no rebellion, no inkling of resistance, no consideration that there may be another option. One day that will happen here on earth! One day when Jesus comes back, God’s will will be done on earth as in Heaven.

God’s will can be done here and now though. In the lives of Christians God’s will should be done here on earth as it is in Heaven. No questions, no second thoughts, no hesitation.

Of course I say that and then struggle to do it. In my sinful nature I can convince myself that I don’t really have to do everything God says, as long as I do enough. Maybe I don’t have to do certain things at all. But that’s not how it works. God is God and God is good, so everything He says is and must be correct and best. For me to disobey in whole or in part is still completely wrong.

So when I pray, I often must ask God’s forgiveness and then for His help to learn and do better. This obedience requires that I deny myself. It requires that I spend more time with God. It requires that I spend more time in God’s Word. It requires that I have some difficulties come my way in order to learn and be tested. It requires working closely together with God. It requires actually listening to God and doing what He says! It may take me the rest of my life, but I want to learn to do God’s will on earth as it is done in Heaven!
