There are many choices in life between good, better, and best. Sometimes we have a good idea or plan, but there is a better one. Sometimes there is a course of action that isn’t just better, it is literally and objectively the best one to take. It takes discernment to know which course to take, wisdom to see when you should let go of your own plotted course, and discipline to choose the correct course when it’s difficult and unpopular. Other times a situation just happens and we have no plan or pre-plotted course. As we decide how to handle it, we must still must be on the lookout for what is best in the midst of things that are simply good or marginally better.
Just because I can do a passable amount of work on something doesn’t necessarily mean I shouldn’t still give it my best effort.
Just because I’m doing better than someone else doesn’t necessarily mean I’m doing the best I can.
Just because I really, really like my idea doesn’t necessarily make it the best one.
Just because someone else really, really likes their idea doesn’t necessarily make it the best one.
Sometimes you’ll have to let go of your plan or solution when someone has a better one. Sometimes you’ll have to admit that your plan or solution isn’t the best. Sometimes the plan or solution you use all the time for a situation isn’t the one you need this time. Take inventory and choose the best plan or solution. And remember that God always has the best plans and solutions. God’s plans and solutions aren’t just good, they are always better than yours. In fact, God’s plans and solutions aren’t just better than yours, they are the actual best plans and solutions.
Oh, and remember one more thing: A situation doesn’t have to be problematic for you to be on the lookout for what’s best. Sometimes when things are going perfectly well we forget that there might be other things we need to do or other choices we need to make.
Life will give you many options and situations, whether you’re planning for them or not. Why have what’s just good or what’s just better when you can have what’s truly best? You don’t have to settle, and you don’t have to do this by yourself. Trust God, do what He says, and leave the consequences up to Him.
