Recently at church some of our kids sang “If I Were There”, a song wondering what one might do if they were there for the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s gotten me wondering what I’d think and do if I were there. Would I have the knowledge I do now and just effectively have time travelled? That would be a much different experience than if I were from that time and place. Either way, I’m sure I’d be in awe once I figured out what was really going on.
If I were there as one of Mary’s or Joseph’s friends or family members, would I believe that Mary was supernaturally with child and that this Child was in fact God’s Savior for us?
If I were there as Mary gave birth, would I have been any help? How would I have felt about seeing God incarnate? How would I have felt about Him being so helpless?
If I were there with the shepherds when the angels announced Jesus’ birth, would I have thought I was dreaming? Would I have had a heart attack?
If I were there with the wise men when they decided to follow the star, would I have come to the same conclusion they had about the King being born? Would I have prepared a gift and gone with them?
If I were there through all this, what would I tell people about it?
I wasn’t there, but I don’t have to have been. I have still responded to Christ, just like anyone can to this very day. I believe in Him and what He’s done for us through His birth, life, death, burial, and resurrection. What about you?
