Lately in church, the choir and orchestra have been practicing for our upcoming Christmas musical. Some of the pieces are much more complicated than we’ve done before, and while we’re getting the hang of it, we know we need a little more practice. A few don’t like to play the songs we’re not good at, but because each musician knows we won’t get better if we don’t practice them, we play them anyway – even when we could just skip those songs and play something else. The pieces are beautiful, we would just like them to consistently sound that way when we perform them.
I noticed this in myself when I was in the early learning stages of playing the piano. I liked to practice and play the songs I was good at, but I quickly found that I wasn’t going to get good at the songs I was bad at if I didn’t practice them. I also found out that the reason I didn’t like most of the songs I was bad at was just because I couldn’t play them well, and once I practiced and polished them, I liked them a lot!
Sometimes in life we’re going to have to practice things we don’t like, but we need to realize that we won’t get better at these things if we don’t do them. Sometimes in life we’re going to have to do things we don’t like, but we need to realize that they won’t get done and we won’t get any better at them unless we just do them. Sometimes we don’t like to do certain things because we’re not good at them and that stresses us out, but maybe if we got better at them by doing them more regularly, we’d find we enjoy these things a little more.
Practice and discipline are important. They make life a lot easier once you get to doing them consistently.
