Sometimes we Christians who grew up in church get too familiar with our little Christianese phrases. I’ve heard some people say we get inoculated to them. We hear certain words and terms so often that they stop meaning anything, assuming we truly understood what they mean in the first place.
What does it mean to “get saved”? What is repentance actually? What does it mean to be washed in the blood of the Lamb? Why do we even say it like that? What is the Kingdom of Heaven or the Kingdom of God? What does it mean that it is “at hand”? What do we need to do about that? What is prayer? What does it do? Why and how should we do it? Does “not forsaking the assembling” in Hebrews 10:25 just mean we should go to church together, or is there more to it? Is “love the sinner, hate the sin” in the Bible? When we talk about divine providence, what does that even cover? What do we mean when we say, “The Lord just laid it on my heart”? What is a “sin nature”? What even is a trinity, and how does it work? What is the “indwelling of the Holy Spirit,” and how does that work?
Now that I’ve raised all these questions, am I going to answer them for you? No. For one, I think you should do your own digging about it. For two, explaining would require a post a little too long. I’ll probably cover some of these topics in future posts if I haven’t covered them already, but you should still study up for yourself. And for whoever else has these questions for you.
Let’s not get so familiar with our beliefs and the phrases thereof that we ourselves don’t even know what they mean.
