I have a lot of notes from yesterday morning’s sermon, so I’m going to organize them into a blog post.
Sometimes the heart and the mind are the same thing. Even when we make a distinction between the two, there is a very, very strong connection between them. What is in your heart and mind will affect how you behave. What you put in is what you will get out. Whatever thoughts you entertain in your mind and heart will start coming out in your actions. Your thoughts and your actions are inseparable, and each is just as important as the other. The truth will eventually come out. Your tongue and your actions will tattle on your mind and heart, even when you’re just talking to yourself. What you are on the inside will make its way to the outside.
Let’s look at a few metaphors for our inner workings and our outer behaviors. What you marinate in will be the aroma and flavor you give forth. The heart and mind are the headwaters of what flows out of our lives. Your programming determines your production, and you can’t produce what you haven’t been programmed to do. What you plant is what will grow, so whether it’s apples or wild oats, that’s what you’re going to get.
What’s between the ears is what’s on the heart, on the tongue, guiding the feet, and accomplished by the hands. Outward actions and inward attitudes cannot be separated. How you behave is determined by how you think. What are we ruminating on and marinating in? What are we cultivating and curating in and around us? What are we doing both within and without ourselves to improve our thoughts and actions?
As the pastor put it: We are not what we think we are, but what we think, we are. Think well and live accordingly.
